♪ Teenage mutant ninja turtles! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!! TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES!!! Turtles in a half shell, Turtle POWER!!! ♫ Sorry about that; I couldn’t think of a better way to start my TMNT party other than singing that iconic song I grew up hearing. I’m sure that most of you have at the very least heard of the Ninja Turtles at some point in your life, which is one of the many reasons why I am writing on ways to throw this party.
There are a lot of things about the TMNT that can be used for decking up a party. With the new cartoon that is showing on Nick, you can buy a lot of decorations to put up. The majority of these can be found via a simple web search for “TMNT party supplies” or even a trip to your local supermarket/party supply store. If you want to take that route that is cool, but if you’re like me and a little more hands on (aka borderline broke) you have other options that you can play around with as well.
Green balloons can be blown up and painted on with all four of the turtle faces. All you would really need is white, orange, blue, purple, and red paint as well as a black sharpie. Inflate the balloons, paint their masks on, and allow drying. Once the paint is dry; you can add the white to make their eyes. Again let that dry and finish off your Ninja Turtles by using your sharpie to make their eyes, mouth, and nose. If you don’t feel the artistic desire to paint you could always buy green and silver balloons. Once the balloons have been filled you can either attach the TMNT colored string to your green balloons, or brown string for Master Splinter, and purple string for Shredder. Another decoration that involves painting is manhole covers. For this process you can paint paper plates, craft foam, or cardboard to mimic the sewer lids.
Craft foam can be used for endless possibilities, as long as you or your guests feel crafty. If the party is aimed more towards children, you can have the ‘Cowabunga crafts corner’ with pre cut designs which can be glued together and taken home. All it takes to do this is a design, scissors, and some glue. Before you know it you have the Foot Clan’s symbol, any of the Turtles, Shredder, etc.
Options for entertainment may vary depending on the age of the guests and how high they want their nostalgia meter to read. For me there is really only one TMNT time zone, and because I am a dweeb I have the complete DVD set from the late 80’s early 90’s series, as well as all three of the original movies: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III. This isn't to say that the newer movie or even the latest cartoon remake are bad; it’s just my meter is set to high and I love re-watching some of the things that I grew up with. Regardless of which era you choose to go with, have fun with it.
Speaking of which, if you don’t have any of the video games from the 1989 original to the more recent ones released in 2009 never fret! Buddyluvo2 from Etsy makes piñata heads for each of the Ninja Turtles characters which honestly aren't too pricey. Your guests can test their skills to see if their abilities with a Bo staff surpass Donatello’s. Next up, Pin the Krang into the exosuit! This game may seem a little silly but we had fun with it, and I got to make one of the major enemies besides Shredder. His exosuit was made from a piece of cardboard that I had sketched and painted the mechanical body on; before making Krang himself from pink craft foam which I gave texture with 3D fabric paint. If any of your guests want a little more action and feel like ninja’s, there is always foam and toy weapons that they can use to role play with after choosing to be a Foot Clan member or a Ninja Turtle.
After “fighting” one another I am sure your guests will be hungry and of course when it comes to food options for a TMNT party, the answer is obvious; PIZZA. This can be quick and easy, or slow and more involved. I say this because you can order pizza, buy a frozen one, purchase items so guests make their own, or buy Lunchable pizzas. [That last option is really for me…I loved those things as a kid!] Anyways, I personally ordered pizza and printed off a cover for the box and it worked out great since my friends are not super patient when it comes to waiting to eat. Other edible pizza options that you can have; include those tiny pizza gummies or even Mikey’s favorite type of pizza: Sardine and hot fudge. Obviously no one’s going to be up for that last one unless you make it a dessert pizza, adding Swedish fish and hot fudge as a jest to his not so appealing most wanted toppings.
If you want your shindig to be a little healthier, then know that pizza isn't the only food you have to serve your guests. You can make a fruit tray using cantaloupe, grapes, blueberries, and strawberries to represent Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo, and Raphael’s masks. You can even have the OOZE (fruit) dip which you can make by adding a little bit of green food coloring to the dip and mixing it in. Making snacks to match their weapons is also an option but may not be as healthy as the tray. Large pretzel stick’s can be labeled as Donnie’s Bo staff, which can have a grey frosting dip that you can dunk them into to make Leo’s katanas. Mikey’s nunchucks are thanks to Kara’s party ideas page where she connected a Twizzler’s pull-n-pill to store brand Swiss Roll type cakes [I miss you Hostess]. Sadly I hadn't thought of a way to create Raph’s twin sai which is a bummer, though I did have “Shredder’s cheddar ball” which hopefully makes up for the lack of Raphael’s weapon.
As far as drinks for the party goes ‘The OOZE,’ which you can either make using Mountain Dew, green punch, or green colored lemonade is a fairly easy and themed refreshment. The more mellow guests had the options for Splinter’s green tea, which can be served hot or iced. Other alternatives that I found to work are blue, orange, purple, and red PowerAde/Gatorade to which I liked to call Ninja Turtle Ade [oh yeah, that’s original :b]. This option gives your guests a healthier drink and an opportunity to pick their favorite TMNT.
For those responsible adults you can thank The Drunken Moogle for this 21+ beverage: Mutagen (AKA Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cocktail). Mutagen is made using 1.5 oz pineapple rum, 0.5 oz Midori, 2oz aloe Mango Drink, and 1 Bag of Green Pop Rocks. It is then garnished with a cute turtlesk topper that is crafted together from half a lime and five grapes (4 arms/legs and the head). Of course any mixer that can be made to look like the Ooze or turtle green can be fixed for you and your legal drinking age guests. There are at least three differently made “Ninja Turtle” cocktails that my friends and I found while snacking and watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies. All three had their own take and mix and can be found by googling “Ninja Turtle Cocktail.” Last but not least, let us not forget Master Splinters Long island tea made just like the classics.
At the end of your Turtle powered party, when your guest are about to hop into their Party favors for this theme can be a lot of fun. I like to give my guests the options to pick any Ninja Turtle bandana or a purple headband with the foot clan’s symbol drawn on in sharpie. Once they make their decision I equip them with the appropriate (foam) weapons. As stated previous times before, there are many characters so remember you do not have to limit yourself or your quests to a small handful. Another thing you can offer your party goers is the chance to sign up to be a part of Team Turtle. According to the Official TMNT site on Nick, you can sign up to join “Team Turtle” on the hyper-linked site. In doing so this will grant you access to “exclusive videos, free action-packed games, chances to win TMNT prizes, sneak peeks at the mutation in progress, and more!” from what the site says. No matter what though, just remember to have an awesome time. TURTLE POWER!!!
Hope this article helps you on any future endeavors for a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle party that you may have. Just as last time if you have any questions or other ideas that you think would rock out a TMNT party please feel free to let me know. Thank you all for your time!
