Marvel’s Lunella Lafayette

September 13, 2016

lunella 1For a while there, denizens of the comic reading variety reared that ugly, ugly internet hydra when DC Universe announced that Lunella Lafayette, aka Moon Girl, was crowned smarter than Tony Stark at just 9-year-old.

But, let’s think about this for a second.

DC already made it clear that there would be a push for a more diverse and inclusive world for their characters. Look at Amadeus Cho as the new Hulk and Kamala Khan as Ms. Marvel which marked the swing shift of the campaign. For any long time fans, this came as no surprise.

However, Lunella is only half human …Inhuman, to be exact.

This is also a major premise of her drive to keep from mutating into, well, a mutant once she hits the beginning stages of adolescence. A scientific drive which ultimately leads to her first encounter with Devil Dinosaur in issue #1, I might add.

So, why a 9-year-old genius? Why now?

adorable-lunellaThat, my friend, is the changing of societal norms even in the geeky and nerdy world we call home.

Readers want to see more relatable characters, more representation of the modern person in this century, and most importantly, a changing political environment.

To quote Newsrama.com’s report of Marvel’s Director of Content and Character Development Sana Amanat, during the Women of Marvel panel at SDCC 2016:

“Interestingly and importantly, Lunella isn’t just the smartest person in the Marvel Universe, she’s also black and female – two characteristics not typical for the Marvel’s usual cast of super-geniuses. Female scientific super-geniuses are rare for either of the two major comic book publishers, relatively even more so, in fact, than black super-geniuses. The role has been historically filled by males, a product of both major publishers’ superhero lines’ birth in the late 30s and early 60s, respectively.”
